And the Award for It Being Friday Goes To...

It’s Friday and I finally found my mojo. You see, I am having a dull day at work so blogging about work is out of the question. I am not going to talk about Anna Nicole because I feel nothing but sad for her and want the story to fade away. I am not going to write anything about Shinehead O’Spears because she scares the Hell out of me and if I remember correctly she bought land in south Florida. She could find me. With the Penguin already after me I must limit my exposure to insane umbrella wielding maniacs. I was out of options until I read about the Academy Awards. Oh thank you Hollywood for giving me something to blog about today.

Presenting the 79th Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences award for Best Director will be Steven Spielberg, Francis Ford Coppola, and George Lucas. The probable winner will be Martin Scorsese or Clint Eastwood. This would put the single greatest collection of amazing film makers on stage together at the same time so what exactly is George “Phantom Menace” Lucas doing on the same stage as Steven “Saving Private Ryan” Spielberg, Francis Ford “Apocalypse Now” Coppola, Martin “More movies than G-d” Scorsese and Clint “Unforgiven” Eastwood anyway?

Sing with me:
One of these things is not like the others,
One of these things just doesn't belong,
Can you tell which thing is not like the others
By the time I finish my song?

Did you guess which thing was not like the others?
Did you guess which thing just doesn't belong?
<--- If you guessed this one is not like the others, Then you're absolutely...right!

Your picks are probably dead-on. Just as an aside, however, I find Penelope Cruz's voice tres irritating. It's probably a personal idiosyncracy, but it really irritates me.

I thought Peter O'Toole was dead 'til I saw him on Jay Leno last night. He LOOKED like walking death. How old is he, anyway?

Thank you for refraining from mentioning Shinehead (allegedly driven back to rehab by her mother) and the poor Anna Circus. I do, however, have Court TV on and it gets weirder by the day.

Peter O'toole deserves good things.

Oh, I know, Littlebird. I like Peter O'Toole. A lot. I was just dismayed that he looked so old and frail. I'm going to hate it when we lose him.

Me sees and agrees with your point Kanrei. Lucas made a great movie (once)and even that one, although extremely famous and influential on Hollywood movie Making; really, there weren't many big budget sci-fi flicks before star wars: forbidden planet, 2001. the day the earth stood still, it pales in comparison to any of the other directors you mentioned.
Also when talking about great directors me finds it difficult to discuss Spielbergs work. Prolific and popular his work doesn't ride in the same car as many other fabulous movie makers.

I got 4 of 8 picks right. Next year I am going to have to make more guesses. If I had bothered with the Gore award I knew he would get I would have gotten over 50%

Hey Kan, don't even get me started on movie discussions...

I knew you were dead wrong about the best actress award. Nobody expected a surprise or close call there.

I knew Peter wouldn't get best actor either. I'm glad they gave it to Forest; he's such a great person and a fabulous actor.

Yeah, Lucas was a mis-match with Coppela and Spielberg but he's no lightweight figure either. Consider all the stuff he influenced and changed in the industry behind the big screen (or how you listen to movies). I had no problem with him being up there with them and clearly they didn't either.

Good call on best supporting actress though! Although you had taken it further and thought it would sweep a bunch and it didn't at all. In fact, it lost out on best song even though it had 3 of the 5 nominations (although your logic behind the environment weight supports this result).

I was 8 out of 10 this year in my predictions. I blew best supporting actress and best foreign film (I thought Pan's Labrynth would surely take that one).

Var,
I would love to get you started. I live to discuss movies. Please never hold back. I will now have to write about movies more just to egg you on =D
